VISA D2 - Portuguese Residence Visa for Self Employed Professional Activity or Immigrant Entrepreneurs

The request of Residence Visa to exercise independent professional activity or immigrant entrepreneurs (visa D2) should normally be made by the applicant in his country of residence, on a Portuguese Embassy or Consulate.

The deadline for the decision is usually 60 days, counted from the day of submission of the application, duly submitted, with all the documentation mentioned below. This period may vary depending on the country of origin.

In many cases, foreigners enter Portugal with a Tourist Visa, and during their Visa term and a possible extension, treat their application for a residence permit already in Portugal, with the SEF (Foreigners and Borders Service) and starting the business or activity simultaneously. In other cases, they use the tourist visa period to analyze and deal the investment directly in Portugal, and then return to their home country with all the documentation to request a residence Visa D2.

How to apply?

The following documents are usually required:

  • Visa Application Form (model at the Embassy of Portugal or SEF);
  • Passport valid for more than 3 months beyond the planned departure date (original and 1 copy);
  • 1 photo, size 3 x 4 cm, color and plain background, updated and in good conditions to atest the applicant's identification;
  • Criminal record certificate, issued less than three months, the country of origin or where the applicant has lived for more than a year, authenticated by the respective Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
  • Medical insurance, which covers any expenses required for medical reasons, including urgent medical assistance and possible repatriation (original);
  • Application for Portuguese Criminal Record query by SEF (original);
  • Proof of accommodation conditions (original);
  • Proof of means of subsistence (original);
  • Independent professional activity:
    • Contract for services with a company or Contract/Proposal for services with clients (original);
    • When applicable, a statement issued by the competent authority for verification of the profession exercise requirements that, in Portugal, it is subject to special qualifications.
  • Immigrant entrepreneurs:
    • Declaration that you made or intends to carry out an investment operation in Portugal, indicating their nature, value and duration (original);
    • Proof that you made investment operations (original); or
    • Proof that you have funds available in Portugal, including those obtained from any financial institution in Portugal, and the intention to carry out an investment operation in Portuguese territory, properly described and identified (original).
At any moment you will also need to apply for your personal Tax Id Number in Portugal, so you can start any kind of activity or investment in Portugal.
